A Michigan Treasure: Muskallonge Lake Campground
from:For some Midwesterners, no summer is complete without a trip through Michigan. This vastly under-appreciated state possesses a great deal of natural beauty along with a number of interesting attractions. So, if you’re tempted to vacation in Michigan this summer, you might want to begin with a stay at the Muskallonge Lake campground.
The Muskallonge Lake campground is a 217-acre park nestled between the shores of Lake Superior and the Muskallonge Lake. Its location is 28 miles northwest of Newberry in Luce County, making it convenient to get to. The Muskallonge Lake campground is also renowned for its stunning scenery, thanks to its towering forests, glistening lakes, and sparkling streams.
What is also fascinating about Muskallonge Lake campground is its storied history. It was the one-time site of Deer Park, an area known for its lumber trade in the late 19th century. Before commerce began in the area, Deer Park was home to an Indian camp. It also came to house the Coast Guard Life Saving Station.
Muskallonge Lake campground offers a number of recreational activities suitable for the entire family. These include swimming, playground activities, and boating. Fishing is also a favorite preoccupation at Muskallonge Lake campground, thanks to the lake’s ready supply of walleye, perch, small-mouth bass, northern pike, and of course, muskallonge. Meanwhile, in Lake Superior, anglers can take advantage of copious amounts of trout and salmon—long-time favorites among fish-eaters. Hiking and snowmobiling are also favorite pastimes among those who visit Muskallonge Lake campground.
If you love waterways, Muskallonge Lake campground is certainly the place to be. Within a convenient 20-mile radius of the site, you’ll find some 70 lakes and five rivers. If you’re a history-lover, you’ll be captivated by trips to nearby historic forts and the Father Marquette National Memorial and Museum. You can also drive to nearby Tahquamenon Falls State Park to enjoy the view of magnificent waterfalls and scenic Whitefish Point. To the south, you can enjoy the Kingston Plains and the Seney National Wildlife Refuge.
The park is also a perfect spot for hunters, thanks to the duck and goose hunting which are offered on nearby lakes. As a result, outdoorsmen have come to adore this Michigan landmark. But you don’t have to be a highly active person to appreciate the campground. Just sitting quietly at the campground, communing with nature, can be a worthwhile experience. Because of its family-oriented nature, the camping site is likely to please all the members of your brood. They’ll come to appreciate that you don’t need bright lights and the allures of the big city to be happy. All that may be necessary is a peaceful night gazing up at the stars.
